Despite letting a 20-point lead slip through their fingers, Lebanon won a fourth consecutive game with a white-knuckle 34-32 victory at Station Camp Friday, Sept. 29.
The Blue Devils raced out to a 20-0 lead and pounded Bison quarterback Max Barnett to the point he was kept on the sidelines in favor of Nick Nelson.
Taking direct snaps as tailback in the “Wildcat formation” Nelson pounded Lebanon to the tune of 281 yards on 28 carries and TD runs of 19, 30, 71 and 38 yards.
A pair of botched Station Camp PAT attempts late in the fourth quarter allowed Lebanon to escape at best overtime and at worst — a loss.
“We made some plays when we had to,” said Lebanon head coach Chuck Gentry.
“Tobi (Adewale) made a big interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter to keep them from scoring and we made a big play on offense when Tyrique (Cooper) broke the draw play.
“Give Station Camp credit, they kept scoring. But we camp up with the onsides kick after their last one when Tobi went up and grabbed it.”
Lebanon tailback Tyrique Cooper rushed for 228 yards on 15 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 32, 40, 62 and 79 yards.
Quarterback Chandler Crite finished 8-of-13 passing for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Jeremiah Hastings had three receptions for 40 yards including a circus grab in the front corner of the endzone for Lebanon’s first score.
The officials slowed the pace of the game with numerous flags. An incredible 26 penalties were accepted for 209 yards.
Lebanon moved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Region 4, 6A headed into an Oct. 6 game at Coffee County High.
